Mission Description                      

Job Purpose:
The Operations Supervisor is responsible for overseeing and coordinating daily terminal operations, ensuring efficient and safe cargo handling, vessel operations, and yard management. This role ensures that all operational activities are carried out according to established safety standards, compliance regulations, and company policies. The Operations Supervisor leads a team of operational staff and collaborates with other departments to achieve smooth and timely operations at the Cape Town Terminal.

Job Function:
1. Supervision of Terminal Operations:
• Supervise and coordinate all terminal operations, including cargo handling, vessel operations, container yard management, and gate activities.
• Ensure that operations are conducted efficiently, safely, and in compliance with internal and external regulations.
• Monitor terminal activities to ensure the timely movement of cargo, minimizing downtime, delays, and congestion.
• Ensure that all stakeholder concerns and queries are resolved to maintain high levels of stakeholder are satisfied at all times.

2. Team Leadership & Coordination:
• Lead and manage a team of operational staff, including but not limited to cargo handlers, tally clerks, yard clerks, cargo controllers, forklift operators, and other terminal personnel.
• Ensure staff are trained on operational processes, safety standards, and equipment use.
• Assign daily tasks, set performance goals, and monitor progress to ensure operational targets are met.
• Foster a team-oriented environment, providing feedback and support to enhance productivity and teamwork.
• Shift commences with a toolbox and safety talk
3. Safety & Compliance:
• Enforce safety protocols and ensure adherence to company safety policies and regulatory requirements.
• Conduct regular safety inspections of the terminal and equipment, addressing any safety concerns promptly.
• Report any incidents, accidents, or hazards and assist with incident investigations to identify root causes.

4. Equipment & Resource Management:
• Monitor the usage and condition of terminal equipment (e.g., cranes, forklifts, reach stackers) and report maintenance needs.
• Ensure that operational resources, including manpower and equipment, are optimally allocated to meet operational demands.
• Coordinate with maintenance teams to ensure the availability of equipment and minimize downtime.
5. Operational Efficiency & Continuous Improvement:
• Identify and implement process improvements that enhance operational efficiency, reduce costs, and improve throughput.
• Review operational procedures and suggest enhancements to streamline operations and optimize resource utilization.
• Collaborate with other departments, such as planning, logistics, and customer service, to ensure smooth operations and resolve issues efficiently.
6. Performance Monitoring & Reporting:
• Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) for terminal operations, including vessel turnaround times, cargo throughput, and safety compliance.
• Generate hourly, daily, weekly,monthly and quarterly operational reports to track performance and identify areas for improvement.
• Provide management with regular updates on operational challenges, resource requirements, and improvement initiatives.
7. Stakeholder Communication:
• Liaise with shipping lines, customers, and other external stakeholders to ensure smooth coordination of vessel schedules, cargo deliveries, and gate operations.
• Address and resolve operational issues or delays promptly, ensuring effective communication with all parties involved.


Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
• A diploma or degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, or a related field is preferred.
• 2-5 years of experience in terminal operations, shipping, logistics, or a related field, with at least 1-2 years in a supervisory role.
• Experience in a terminal, port, or container yard environment is highly desirable.
• Strong knowledge of terminal operations, cargo handling, vessel management, and safety protocols.
• Ability to lead and motivate a diverse team, ensuring high levels of performance and morale.
• Excellent communication, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution skills
