Job description

Mission Description                      

- Lead and manage the Transport function, including Fleet Operations, Drivers, Workshop and Subcontracted Transport.

- Develop and improve transport and logistics services in line with market requirements, operational capacity, profitability and business needs.

- Monitor fleet performance and utilisation, including truck turnaround time, number of trips, on-time deliveries and overall service quality.

- Plan, coordinate and monitor cargo deliveries and collections across local and cross-border operations.

- Manage operational relationships with internal departments, clients and other stakeholders, ensuring timely communication and resolution of operational issues.

- Oversee fleet tracking and journey management, including GPS monitoring, Journey Management Plans and delivery documentation.

- Manage subcontracted transport operations, including transporter selection, rate negotiation, performance monitoring, safety and contractual compliance.

- Ensure subcontracted transport services meet required standards for service delivery, reliability, profitability and cost control.

- Oversee workshop operations, including preventive maintenance planning, spare parts, tyres, oils and lubricants, stock control and procurement.

- Monitor fleet and workshop costs and identify opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce operational expenses.

- Ensure effective use of fleet and workshop management systems, including MAXIMO and other applicable operational tools.

- Work closely with QHSE to ensure compliance with safety requirements and implementation of audit recommendations.

- Manage workshop procurement and vendors, ensuring competitive pricing, quality and favourable commercial terms.

- Support the development and implementation of procedures and controls to improve workshop and transport operations.

- Monitor operational and financial performance and implement corrective actions where required.

- Escalate significant operational, commercial and service-related issues and ensure timely resolution.

- Prepare regular operational and performance reports covering fleet performance, costs, service delivery and improvement actions.

- Lead, coach and develop the Transport team, ensuring alignment with company objectives and operational standards.

 

Profile

Required Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Supply Chain Management, Logistics or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years' experience managing transport or fleet operations, preferably a fleet of more than 25 trucks.
- Strong knowledge of transport operations within Uganda and the wider East African region.
- Knowledge of URA customs procedures and cross-border transport requirements.
- Experience supervising and managing operational teams.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Word.
- Experience using fleet management and tracking systems; knowledge of Telematix or similar systems is an advantage.
- Strong communication, reporting and administrative skills.
