Mission description

Job Purpose:
To support the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the company's Quality, Health, Safety, and Environmental (QHSE) management systems within port operations. The role ensures compliance with relevant legislation, industry standards, and company policies, with a strong focus on maintaining a safe working environment and minimizing environmental impacts.



Training & Communication:
• Assist in developing and delivering safety and environmental training programs to employees and contractors.
• Ensure refresher QHSE training is monitored, and information is collated in conjunction with HR, or whenever expiry is imminent.
• Complete and or update appointment letters on receipt of training certificates or as necessary
• Ensure that member understands their responsibilities and the duration of their appointment by receiving signatures.
• Support the implementation of Behavioural Based Safety (BBS) initiatives across port operations.
• Act as a liaison with port authorities and regulatory bodies on QHSE matters.

Document Management System
• Ensure that the DMS register is constantly updated, maintained and current with latest versions of relevant records, forms, organograms, work instructions etc
• Maintain DMS master records (original/editable documents) and PDF versions
• Assist employees with training on how to utilise the Document Management System as required

Progress System/ IAF's
• Monitor IAF's on a monthly basis to ensure IAF's are closed out correctly and timeously
• Monthly reporting of IAF statistics for management reporting
• Monitoring and follow up of manual IAF's and register as required

Profile

Health & Safety:
• •Monitor and enforce safety standards and safe work practices in port operations including cargo handling, vessel loading/unloading, and equipment operations.
• Conduct risk assessments, safety audits, and inspections to identify hazards and recommend corrective actions.
• Participate in incident/accident investigations and prepare reports with root cause analysis and corrective action tracking.
• Ensure implementation and compliance with occupational health and safety policies and procedures.
• Promote a strong safety culture through toolbox talks, training sessions, and awareness campaigns.

Environmental Management:
• Ensure compliance with environmental regulations applicable to port operations, including waste management, spill prevention, emissions control, and marine protection.
• Conduct environmental risk assessments and assist in the development of environmental management plans (EMPs).
• Monitor environmental aspects such as stormwater runoff, air emissions, and noise, and maintain related records and reports.
• Support emergency response planning for environmental incidents (e.g., oil spills).

Compliance & Reporting:
• Ensure all QHSE documentation is maintained in accordance with ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 standards.
• Assist with internal and external audits and follow-up on corrective/preventive actions.
• Maintain records for legal and regulatory reporting related to safety and environment.
• Assist QHSE Manager to follow up of QHSE objectives and relevant reporting.


Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
• Diploma or Degree in Health, Safety, Environment, or related field.
• Minimum 3–5 years of experience in a QHSE role within the logistics, port, or maritime sector.
• In-depth knowledge of relevant legislation, ISO standards (14001 & 45001), and port safety regulations.
• Able to work under pressure and meet deadlines timeously.
• Certified Internal Auditor (preferred).
• Excellent administration skills required
• Experience in incident investigation techniques (e.g., ICAM, TapRoot).
